Saint Lucia Entry Requirements

Saint Lucia Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed March 2026. Entry requirements can change without notice. Always verify current requirements with the Saint Lucia Department of Home Affairs and Immigration or your country's embassy before traveling.
Saint Lucia welcomes visitors through two international airports, Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in Vieux Fort, which handles long-haul flights, and George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) near Castries, which serves regional inter-island routes. The island nation operates a straightforward immigration process, and most visitors from North America, Europe, and the Commonwealth will find entry uncomplicated with no advance visa required. Upon arrival, travelers pass through immigration where a landing card is completed, then collect luggage and clear customs before entering the island proper. Saint Lucia is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and maintains a liberal visa policy for citizens of most Western nations. Visitors are typically granted a tourist stay of up to six weeks upon arrival, though citizens of certain countries, UK and Commonwealth nationals, may be admitted for longer periods at the immigration officer's discretion. Extensions beyond the initial grant period are handled through the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration in Castries. All visitors, regardless of nationality, must hold a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds to cover their stay. Travelers arriving on cruise ships are processed differently, a shorter shore pass is granted for the day, and passengers are not required to complete full immigration formalities unless they intend to disembark and remain on the island. For anyone planning an extended stay, whether for leisure, work, or study, it is essential to confirm current entry requirements with the Saint Lucian High Commission or Embassy serving your country of residence before departure.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Saint Lucia operates a visa-free entry policy for citizens of most developed nations and Commonwealth member states. There is no electronic travel authorization (ETA) system currently in place. Travelers either qualify for visa-free admission or must obtain a visa from a Saint Lucian diplomatic mission before travel. The immigration officer at the port of entry has final discretion over the duration of stay granted.

Visa-Free Entry
Up to 6 weeks (42 days) for most nationalities; UK and many Commonwealth citizens may receive up to 6 months at the officer's discretion

Citizens of these countries may enter Saint Lucia without a visa for tourism and short visits. Entry is granted at the port of arrival subject to the immigration officer's assessment of purpose of travel and intended duration of stay.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Ireland All European Union member states (including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, etc.) Switzerland Norway Japan South Korea Singapore Brazil Mexico All CARICOM member states (including Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, etc.) Most Commonwealth of Nations member states

A valid return or onward ticket is required for all visa-free visitors. Immigration officers may request proof of accommodation (hotel booking, host address) and evidence of sufficient funds. The initial stay granted can be extended by applying to the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration before expiry.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Single or multiple entry visas are available. Tourist visas typically allow stays of up to 30 days

Saint Lucia does not currently operate an electronic travel authorization (ETA) system. Travelers who do not qualify for visa-free access must apply for a traditional visa through a Saint Lucian High Commission, Embassy, or Honorary Consulate. In regions where no Saint Lucian mission exists, applications may be routed through the British High Commission or a designated CARICOM representative mission.

Monitor the official Saint Lucia government website for any future rollout of an ETA or e-visa system, as Caribbean nations are increasingly adopting digital authorization platforms.

Visa Required
Tourist visas typically permit stays of up to 30 days, with possibility of extension in-country

Citizens of countries not covered by the visa-free arrangement must obtain a visa before traveling to Saint Lucia. The list of visa-required nationalities includes many countries in Africa, parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe not covered by the general policy. If you are unsure whether your nationality requires a visa, contact the nearest Saint Lucian diplomatic mission or the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration.

How to Apply: Apply at the nearest Saint Lucian High Commission or Embassy. Where no mission exists, applicants may approach a British diplomatic mission or the nearest CARICOM-designated post. Applications typically require a completed application form, valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), passport-size photographs, proof of onward/return travel, proof of accommodation, bank statements demonstrating sufficient funds, and the applicable visa fee. Processing time is typically 5, 15 business days.

Visa applicants should apply well in advance of travel. Saint Lucia does not currently offer visa-on-arrival for nationalities in this category. Always consult the official Saint Lucia government website or your nearest Saint Lucian mission for the definitive and up-to-date list of visa-required nationalities.

Arrival Process

Arriving in Saint Lucia is generally a smooth and efficient experience. Most visitors clear immigration and customs at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) within 30, 60 minutes of landing. During peak holiday periods (December, January and July, August) queues can lengthen, so factor in additional time if connecting to onward transport or a cruise departure.

1
Complete the Arrival Card (Landing Card)
On your inbound flight or at the port of entry, you will be given an arrival/landing card to complete. Fill in your name exactly as it appears in your passport, your Saint Lucian address (hotel name and location is sufficient), the purpose of your visit, and the intended length of stay. Keep this card, you may be required to surrender part of it on departure.
2
Immigration, Passport Control
Proceed to the immigration hall and join the appropriate queue (citizens/residents or visitors). Present your passport, completed landing card, and return/onward ticket to the immigration officer. The officer will ask standard questions about your visit and may request sight of your accommodation booking or proof of funds. Your passport will be stamped with the permitted period of stay, check this stamp before leaving the desk.
3
Baggage Collection
Proceed to the baggage reclaim area and collect your checked luggage. Flight and carousel information is displayed on overhead screens. If your baggage is delayed or missing, report this to the airline's handling agent before leaving the baggage hall.
4
Customs Declaration
After collecting luggage, proceed to the customs area. If you have goods to declare (items exceeding duty-free allowances, currency above the declaration threshold, or restricted goods), use the red channel. If you have nothing to declare beyond personal items within the permitted limits, use the green channel. Customs officers may conduct random checks regardless of which channel you use.
5
Exit to Arrivals Hall
Once through customs, you exit into the public arrivals area where taxi drivers, tour operators, and hotel representatives are stationed. Pre-arranged transfers, car rental desks, and official taxis are all accessible from the arrivals hall. Agree on a fare with taxi drivers before setting off, fares to Castries from UVF typically take 60, 90 minutes and are regulated.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for the duration of your intended stay. Most immigration officers expect at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned departure date. Ensure your passport has at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof that you have arranged to leave Saint Lucia before your authorized stay expires. This can be a flight booking confirmation, ferry reservation, or cruise itinerary showing departure. This is required for all visitors, including those from visa-free countries.
Completed Arrival/Landing Card
Usually distributed on the aircraft or available at the port of entry. Must be completed in full before approaching the immigration counter.
Accommodation Details
The name and address of where you will be staying, a hotel booking confirmation, villa rental agreement, or the address of a private host. Immigration officers routinely ask for this.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
While not always requested, be prepared to demonstrate that you have enough money to cover your stay. Bank statements, credit cards, or cash are acceptable. A general guideline is USD $50, 100 per person per day, though this is not a formally published threshold.
Visa (if applicable)
Citizens of countries requiring a visa must obtain one before travel. Ensure the visa is valid for the dates of your trip and is the correct category (tourist/visitor visa for leisure travel).
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Required only for travelers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission (primarily parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America). The certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Print physical copies of your hotel booking and return flight confirmation. While digital copies on your phone are generally accepted, having paper backups avoids any issues with low battery or connectivity.
Check your passport stamp before walking away from the immigration desk. Verify the date matches your intended stay and that the stamp is legible. If there is a discrepancy, raise it immediately, it is much harder to correct after you have left the hall.
Hewanorra Airport (UVF) is located in the south of the island, roughly 90 minutes from Castries and most northern resorts. Factor this transit time into your plans, if arriving on a late-night flight.
Dress modestly for arrival. Saint Lucia has a conservative culture, and while beach attire is well appropriate on the beach, arriving in very revealing clothing at immigration can occasionally attract additional scrutiny.
If traveling with medication, carry a copy of the prescription and keep medicines in their original labeled packaging. This avoids any misunderstanding at customs, for controlled substances.
Taxis from the airport are regulated and metered. Official government-rate taxi cards are available from the tourism desk in arrivals. Politely decline unsolicited offers from unofficial drivers.

Customs & Duty-Free

Saint Lucia Customs & Excise Department manages the importation of goods into the country. Visitors are entitled to bring in reasonable personal items and a defined duty-free allowance. Goods in excess of these allowances are subject to import duty and, potentially, consumption tax. Random baggage checks are conducted even for travelers using the green (nothing to declare) channel.

Alcohol
1.5 liters of spirits (e.g., rum, whisky, gin) OR 1 liter of spirits plus 1 liter of wine
Must be for personal consumption only. Travelers under 18 years of age may not import alcohol.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes OR 50 cigars OR 250 grams of tobacco products
Must be for personal use. Travelers under 18 years of age may not import tobacco products.
Currency
No limit on amount brought in. But amounts of EC$10,000 (approximately USD $3,700) or equivalent in any currency must be declared on arrival
Failure to declare large amounts of cash can result in seizure. This applies to all forms of monetary instruments including traveler's checks and money orders.
Gifts and Personal Goods
Gifts and personal items up to a value of approximately EC$270 (roughly USD $100) are typically admitted duty-free
Larger gifts or commercial quantities of goods are subject to customs duty. Goods that are clearly new and in original packaging may attract additional scrutiny. Items imported for commercial purposes are not covered by personal duty-free allowances.
Perfume and Toiletries
Small quantities for personal use during the trip
Commercial quantities of perfume or toiletries are subject to duty.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal narcotics and controlled drugs, possession carries severe criminal penalties under Saint Lucian law
  • Firearms, ammunition, and offensive weapons, without prior written authorization from the Commissioner of Police
  • Pornographic material, including any material depicting minors
  • Counterfeit goods and pirated intellectual property
  • Certain agricultural products, fresh fruits, vegetables, soil, and plant material from specified countries to prevent the introduction of pests and diseases
  • Endangered species and products, items listed under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), including certain corals, shells, exotic skins, and related products

Restricted Items

  • Firearms and ammunition, require prior written authorization from the Commissioner of Police. Application must be made well in advance of travel
  • Prescription medications containing controlled substances (e.g., opioids, certain benzodiazepines), carry the original prescription and a letter from your physician. Quantities must match personal use for the trip duration
  • Live plants and plant cuttings, require a phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin and a Saint Lucian import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture
  • Live animals and pets, require import permits, health certificates, and proof of rabies vaccination. Advance arrangements with the Saint Lucia Ministry of Agriculture are essential (see Special Situations below)
  • Drones and UAV equipment, may require a permit from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) depending on intended use

Health Requirements

Saint Lucia does not impose onerous health-related entry requirements for most travelers. The island has a well-functioning public health infrastructure, and the Ministry of Health monitors for communicable disease risks. Travelers should nonetheless take sensible precautions and consult a travel medicine specialist 4, 6 weeks before departure.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever, required only for travelers aged 1 year and over arriving directly from, or having transited through, countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. This primarily applies to travelers coming from endemic zones in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. A valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP, often called the 'Yellow Card') must be presented at the port of entry.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations, ensure you are up to date on standard immunizations including MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and annual influenza
  • Hepatitis A, recommended for all travelers, as the virus can be transmitted through contaminated food or water
  • Hepatitis B, recommended for travelers who may be exposed to blood or bodily fluids, undergo medical procedures, or have close contact with local populations
  • Typhoid, recommended for adventurous eaters or those traveling away from tourist-standard facilities
  • Rabies, pre-exposure prophylaxis recommended for those spending extended time outdoors, in rural areas with potential exposure to bats or animals
  • COVID-19, while no longer a formal entry requirement, staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations is recommended by health authorities

Health Insurance

Saint Lucia does not require proof of travel health insurance for entry. But it is strongly recommended. Medical care at the main hospital (Owen King EU Hospital in Castries) and private clinics is available but can be costly for uninsured visitors, if emergency treatment, hospitalization, or medical evacuation is required. Travelers should ensure their policy covers emergency medical treatment, repatriation costs, and adventure activities if planned. Policies that include cover for saint lucia travel insurance specifically for trip cancellation and medical emergencies offer the most complete protection.

Current Health Requirements: COVID-19-related entry requirements (testing, vaccination certificates, health declarations) were lifted by Saint Lucia in 2022 and are no longer in effect as of 2026. However, health requirements can change rapidly in response to new health emergencies. Always check the current situation with the Saint Lucia Ministry of Health website, your own government's travel advisory, and the airline you are flying with before departure, as airlines may impose their own requirements independent of border policy.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children traveling on their own passport require no special documentation beyond standard entry requirements. Children traveling on a parent's passport (where the child is listed as an endorsement) may face complications, most immigration authorities now require children to hold their own passport, and this is recommended. A child traveling with only one parent or with a non-parent guardian should carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) or legal guardian, along with proof of the accompanying adult's legal relationship to the child (birth certificate or adoption papers). This is not a formal Saint Lucia legal requirement for all nationalities. But immigration officers have discretion and it is standard good practice that prevents any delays or suspicion of child trafficking.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets into Saint Lucia requires advance planning and cannot be done on arrival without documentation. Requirements include: a valid import permit issued by the Saint Lucia Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Security (apply several weeks in advance); an official veterinary health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian in the country of origin within 72 hours of departure. Proof of valid rabies vaccination (must be administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel for dogs and cats); a completed import declaration form. Dogs and cats are the most commonly imported pets. Exotic animals may face additional CITES-related restrictions or outright prohibition. Pets arriving without proper documentation will be quarantined at the owner's expense or may be refused entry and returned to the country of origin.

Extended Stays and Residency

The standard tourist stay is up to 6 weeks (42 days), extendable to a maximum of 6 months by applying to the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration in Castries before the initial authorized period expires. Extensions require a valid reason (continued tourism, family visit, medical care), proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, and a valid return ticket. Visitors wishing to work, study, or reside in Saint Lucia must apply for the appropriate permit, a work permit from the Ministry of Labour, a student permit, or residency through Saint Lucia's Citizenship by Investment Programme or retirement residency scheme. Overstaying your authorized period without an approved extension is a deportable offense and may affect future entry to Saint Lucia and other CARICOM member states.

Travelers with Dual Nationality

Saint Lucia recognizes dual nationality. Dual nationals should be consistent in which passport they use to enter and exit, use the same passport for entry and departure to avoid any discrepancy in immigration records. Saint Lucian nationals are advised to enter on their Saint Lucian passport. Travelers with dual nationality in a visa-required country may wish to travel on the passport of a visa-free nationality where legally permissible.

Cruise Ship Passengers

Cruise passengers arriving in Castries, Soufrière, or other ports of call are processed through expedited immigration under a shore pass arrangement. You will not receive a full passport stamp; instead, the cruise company coordinates with immigration authorities. Your cruise card is your identification while ashore. You must return to the ship before departure, missing the ship constitutes an overstay and makes you responsible for your own onward travel. If you plan to disembark and remain in Saint Lucia after the cruise departs, you must inform the ship's immigration desk and go through standard immigration procedures.
